Adams Electric has the ability to generate 3D drawings for the purposes of coordination and as-built’s. The 3D work will illustrate and share real-time designs based on true dimensioning and elevations along with exact positioning of all electrical components.
Adams Electric employs several CAD operators and a previous BIM modeling instructor from Appalachian State University. All BIM work is managed on site by the project staff with support from the BIM/CAD operator. Adams Electric has several top of the line CAD stations (both mobile and stationary) that include the following software packages: AutoCAD 09-10, Navisworks 09, Autodesk Revit, and Sketch-Up. Mobile stations can be used for on-site coordination purposes and or project management software with the use of WAN cards. Adams Electric is dedicated to complete the most accurate and detailed BIM model for the Owner and General Contractor.
Based on previous experience, Adams Electric utilizes each piece of the coordination process to its advantage. The 2D drawings are utilized for distribution to the field for reference and installation purposes. These drawings show general field routings and include elevations to minimize 3D conflicts. Once the 2D drawings are converted to 3D drawings and are imported into BIM software along with the other trades, the conflict resolution process then begins. The BIM walkthrough procedure typically occurs once a week on the project site utilizing presentation software. All pertinent trades must be present to address issues and document required modifications to their electronic drawings. Once each meeting is completed all of the modifications by each trade are re-inserted into the master BIM electronic file to prepare for the next review. This process continues until the complete project is reviewed by all parties and all conflicts have been resolved. It has been Adams experience during the weekly meetings that the presentation software be used in lieu of editing software. Utilization of CAD or editing software during the walkthrough process is slow and cumbersome due to the memory requirements for this software.
